Missouri, Kansas, Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas

Medicare, explained before you enroll.

Advantage, Supplement, and drug coverage are not interchangeable. We compare doctors, pharmacies, and prescriptions, then enroll you in the plan that fits.

The moving parts

Two structures. Not one stack of extras.

Original Medicare is Parts A and B. A Supplement helps with what those parts leave over. Drug coverage is a separate Part D plan. Providers who accept Medicare are in play.

What gets lined up

Four facts before anyone talks about a premium.

  • Doctors

The clinics you want to keep, by name.

  • Drugs

    Each prescription, with the dose.

  • Pharmacy

    The counter you already use.

  • County

Where the plan is actually sold.

The two builds

Advantage is one plan. A Supplement is three pieces.

Both start from Medicare. They are not two prices for the same package. One bundles care into a private plan. The other keeps Original Medicare and adds a Supplement and a drug plan.

One contract

Medicare Advantage

A private plan that includes Parts A and B, usually with prescriptions. Many add dental, vision, and hearing with an annual cap. You generally cannot add a Medigap policy to it.

  • Hospital and doctor care
  • Prescriptions, on most plans
  • Dental, vision, and hearing — often capped

Cancer, heart attack, stroke, and short-term care policies can sit beside this plan. Each one pays on its own terms. None of them replaces the medical coverage.

Three pieces

Medicare Supplement

Original Medicare stays in place. A Supplement helps pay deductibles and the Part B 20 percent. A Part D plan covers prescriptions. You can see providers who accept Medicare.

  2. 2Medicare Supplement
  3. 3Part D drug plan

Dental, vision, hearing, and the specified-disease plans are added only if you want them. The Supplement itself is for medical bills Medicare already recognizes.

After the medical plan

Final expense and annuities.

Families often ask about both in the same visit. Neither one is Medicare, and neither one pays doctor bills.

Final expense

A smaller life insurance policy sized for a funeral, a burial, and the last bills. The premium is meant to be something you can keep. We’ll ask who the benefit is for and what is already in force before adding another policy.

How final expense works

Annuities

An annuity is a contract with an insurance company. Some are built to pay income later in retirement. We walk through the type, the timeline, and the fees before any money moves. It does not take the place of a health plan.

How annuities fit

Side by side

Two common paths. Neither one is “the family plan.”

They solve different problems. We compare the ones we’re appointed to offer where you live, then say plainly if a doctor or a drug doesn’t fit.

Medicare Advantage

A private plan that includes Parts A and B, and usually Part D. You generally cannot add a Medigap policy to it.

Premium
Often low, sometimes $0 from the plan. Most people still pay the Part B premium.
Doctors
A network. HMO plans generally mean in-network care. PPOs may allow out-of-network visits at a higher cost.
Prescriptions
Usually built in. The formulary belongs to that plan and can change for the next year.
Extras
Dental, vision, and hearing show up often, usually with a yearly cap. Cancer, heart attack, stroke, and short-term care are separate policies.
Watch for
Referrals and prior authorization. There is an annual out-of-pocket maximum, which Original Medicare alone does not have.

Medicare Supplement

A Medigap policy next to Original Medicare. You add a Part D plan for prescriptions.

Premium
A separate premium that varies by letter, age, and carrier — plus Part B, plus Part D.
Doctors
Any provider that accepts Medicare, anywhere in the United States. The supplement has no network and does not require referrals. The lowest cost is when the doctor accepts Medicare assignment. Foreign travel is only on some plan letters.
Prescriptions
Not included. A standalone Part D plan is the usual pair.
Extras
Generally none. The policy is for deductibles and coinsurance, not cleanings or glasses.
Watch for
The six-month Medigap window starts the month you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. After it, most states allow medical underwriting. Once issued, the policy is guaranteed renewable if you pay the premium. Plan F and Plan C are not sold to people newly eligible on or after January 1, 2020.

Original Medicare by itself is Parts A and B. It is not drug coverage, and it does not cap what you can owe in a bad year. Most people add either an Advantage plan or a Supplement plus a Part D plan.

The review

What actually happens.

A starting point

Tell us where you are. We’ll say what to ask next.

This isn’t a quote and it doesn’t see live plan data. It keeps the first conversation from starting in the wrong place.
